CBD oil and Cannabis Light are both legal and available for purchase throughout Italy, in fact, Italy offers more leniency in Cannabis products than many other European nations, but not quite as much as some others.

Italy, like many European nations, have a fairly relaxed legal stance towards Cannabis and Cannabis products. While some recent changes in the laws governing Cannabis have changed, it is fairly straightforward. Lets get some basic questions about CBD and Cannabis products in Italy answered.

IS IT LEGAL TO BUY CBD IN ITALY ONLINE: YES

Italy allows for CBD oil to be bought and sold online as long as it contains less than 0.6% THC, relatively high compared to some other European nations. Italy also allows for Cannabis strains high in CBD and low in THC, called “Cannabis Light” to be sold.

Both products are readily available from online vendors.

IS IT LEGAL TO BUY CBD IN ITALY OFFLINE: YES

As with online, Italy allows CBD oil to be purchased from shops as long as the THC content is less than 0.6% THC. While some legal debate over the status of “Cannabis Light”, a high CBD low THC strain of Cannabis, has begun amongst law makers, it is still legal to purchase Cannabis Light from shops

IS IT LEGAL TO GROW HEMP FOR CBD IN ITALY? YES

In 2016 the Italian government decided to make Hemp cultivation completely legal. In fact, the amount of land used for Hemp cultivation has increased one hundred percent since 2016; going from 500 acres to 5000. This has been seen as a huge success, as Hemp plants have helped restore contaminated or infertile agricultural land.

This 2016 allowance for hemp cultivation does not come with a restriction of the manufacturing of CBD oil for personal use.

IS IT LEGAL IN ITALY TO BUY PRODUCTS CONTAINING ABOVE 0.2% OF THC FOR MEDICAL USE: YES

As stated above, Italy allows Cannabis products to be sold with THC concentrations of up to 0.6% THC. Such products are readily and easily available, including the previously mentioned Cannabis Light. This being said, the new interior Minister of Italy has pushed for the closure of shops selling Cannabis Light, although to date no action has been taken.

Although the medical Cannabis industry is heavily regulated in Italy Products above 0.6% are available through a doctor. Attitudes towards medical Cannabis are different between the north and southern portions of Italy, with medical Cannabis being more common in the North, but still not as available as in some other countries.

IS IT LEGAL IN ITALY TO BUY PRODUCTS CONTAINING ABOVE 0.2% OF THC FOR RECREATIONAL USE: NO

Yes and no. Purchase of Cannabis products with THC levels of 0.2% is legal, as long as it stays below the previously mentioned limit of 0.6% THC. Much like Canada prior to the 2018 legalization, Cannabis use is decriminalized in Italy, meaning possessing Cannabis products of 0.6% THC or higher is a misdemeanor or a small fine, and not a criminal offense.

CBD oil and Cannabis Light are both legal and available for purchase throughout Italy, in fact, Italy offers more leniency in Cannabis products than many other European nations, but not quite as much as some others. All in all, CBD oil is available and legal in Italy.
